The first 1,000 days of a child’s life are a fascinating period of rapid growth, discovery, and development. Babies and toddlers are naturally curious and eager to explore the world around them. By incorporating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activities into your daily routine, parents and caregivers can nurture essential skills that form the foundation for lifelong learning.
0–6 Months: Sensory Exploration and Curiosity
In the first six months of life, babies are little scientists, using their senses to explore their environment. Babies start developing essential skills like visual tracking, auditory awareness, and tactile exploration, which makes this the perfect time to introduce activities that stimulate sensory awareness and encourage curiosity. Introduce music, movement and play that will help them develop vital cognitive skills and curiosity about the world around them.
Activities to Try
6–12 Months: Object Exploration and Early Problem-Solving
As babies grow more mobile and curious, they start exploring objects more intentionally. This stage is ideal for introducing activities that promote problem-solving and creative movement. At this stage, babies begin to understand more complex concepts like volume, basic physics, and start developing better spatial awareness.
Activities to Try
12–18 Months: Cause-and-Effect Thinking, Early Engineering Skills, and Creative Play
During this stage, toddlers begin experimenting with cause-and-effect relationships while exploring shapes, materials, and movement. They're becoming more independent and curious, actively testing out their ideas and building on their experiences.
Activities to Try
18–24 Months: Early Mathematical Thinking Meets Sensory Creativity
At this age, toddlers begin recognising patterns, categorising objects, and engaging in sensory-rich creative play. They’re starting to see connections in their environment and testing their ideas through play.
Activities to Try
24–36 Months: Inquiry-Based Thinking, Basic Experimentation, and Creative Design
By the time toddlers approach their third birthday, they become natural investigators, asking questions, testing ideas, and expressing themselves creatively. This is the stage where they start to develop more complex thinking skills and engage in more focused experimentation. Science skills really come into play now as they start to question everything and explore the world around them more deeply.
Activities to Try
The first 1,000 days offer a unique window of opportunity to nurture your child’s natural curiosity through STEAM-based activities. By engaging in playful yet purposeful experiences at each developmental stage (from sensory exploration in infancy to inquiry-based experimentation as toddlers) you’re helping your little one build a strong foundation for critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and lifelong learning.
Remember, every child develops at their own pace. The most important thing is to follow their lead, be encouraging, and make learning fun. With your support, they’ll thrive as they explore the wonders of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics from day one.
