How do I deal with challenging child behaviour at my play experience?

Tips on creating a harmonious play experience for both parents and children.

All children go through developmental stages that challenge their parents and carers.

It is important to be aware that:

  • Parents view behaviour differently depending on whether their child is displaying the behaviour or being affected by the behaviour.
  • Challenging behaviours (whilst normal) can disrupt the smooth running of a group and cause anxiety for the parents, other families, and facilitators.
  • Positive group dynamics are achieved when everyone agrees on ways to maintain a safe and inclusive group.

When managing children's behaviour, it is important to consider both the group and the children.

Considerations for the group could include:

  1. Talk as a group and agree on group expectations
  2. Create different play-zones to meet different needs. Eg. Open space for big energetic activities, quiet space for calming down
  3. Provide enough activities to keep children engaged (but not too many to cause over-
    stimulation)
  4. Cap group numbers to avoid crowded or noisy spaces. Consider offering two sessions a
    week
  5. Complete Play Matters Inclusion Training for more information and ideas on adapting a group for diverse needs.

Considerations for the children could include:

  1. Children grow and learn at different paces
  2. Children with behavioural challenges are not necessarily a product of poor parenting
  3. Children face different challenges that may impact their behaviour
  4. Children have diverse life experiences and stressors.
