What if a parent/carer doesn't want their child to be held by a resident?

There is no expectation that a parent/carer's child will be held by the residents. If a resident would like to hold a child, and the parent/carer does not feel comfortable, encourage them to:

  • sit beside the resident and they hold the child while they interact with each other
  • place their child on the resident’s lap (if they feel comfortable) and they continue to support their child
  • place a pillow underneath the resident’s arm
  • always remain present when and if another person is holding their child.
