What is the value of play?

Play is a key element of early childhood development and is the vehicle through which children learn and grow. Children are equipped with the tools to support their learning capacity and well-being through play. Play is fundamental to the development of all children.

Children thrive when they experience a range of different play experiences with other people. Every play session provides an opportunity to learn and expand a child’s understanding of the world. Playgroups offer an ideal environment to provide various play experiences whilst also enabling parents to grow in their role as their child’s first teacher.

Top tips for facilitators:

  • Give children time and space to experiment with different play options.
  • Encourage parent/carer and child interaction.
  • Create different areas that will engage children and families and support their needs (e.g., a book nook or a quiet space).
  • Offer developmentally appropriate activities for all ages and stages.
