Play Matters Australia (PMA) held its Annual General Meeting online on Wednesday 19 November, reflecting on a year of achievements, growth, and community impact.
Professor Kate Williams Chair’s Report Summary
The Board has had a productive year, working closely with CEO Penny and the Senior Leadership Team to deliver on strategic priorities. While we reluctantly accepted the resignations of Adam Carr, James Markwell, and Emma McCudden, we are thankful to welcome two new Directors, Robyn Kiddle and Nadine Moore. Their commitment as volunteer Directors speaks volumes about their character and passion for supporting children, families, and communities.
As the Chair noted,
“It may take a village to raise a child, and it also takes a village to govern a not-for-profit organisation.”
This year saw the introduction of a new voting model and a refreshed constitution, thanks to the leadership of Cecelia Cobb. These changes ensure compliance and strengthen member engagement.
The Board also partnered with the leadership team to launch a new Strategic Plan, advance our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), and celebrate milestones such as the 50th anniversary of the Sunshine Coast Hub. Financial reporting processes were streamlined to support robust governance, special thanks to the Play Matters Finance team for their diligence.
Penny Creamer, CEO Report
Reflecting on the year, Penny shared stories that highlight the heart of PMA’s work: creating connections and providing opportunities for play. From visiting families in Mt Isa and Cloncurry to witnessing the power of Sing&Grow programs in diverse Victorian communities, these moments underscore the profound impact of play.
Key highlights included:
- Intergenerational Play Leadership: Collaborations with Qld Mental Health Commission, Griffith University, and QUT to evaluate and expand programs that reduce social isolation.
- Program Reach: Rural and remote grants, appointment of seven Early Childhood Coordinators across Queensland, and ongoing safety audits to strengthen wellbeing.
- Data and Insights: Annual member survey with 800 responses, playgroup census bi-annually, and improved feedback opportunities to inform service delivery.
- Advocacy and Partnerships: Active involvement in national initiatives and advocacy with partners like Thrive by Five, QCOSS, and Thriving Queensland Kids.
- Diversity and Inclusion: Launch of the Innovate RAP and DEI Circle, alongside professional development opportunities for staff as part of our Development Matters program.
Penny signed off with thanks,
“Amongst the busyness, we find time to tackle our biggest challenges and create meaningful change. Thank you to the Board for your continued support.”
Four Board members were re-nominated and appointed in the meeting, with Professor Kate Williams remaining as Chair, Cecelia Cobb, Nadine Moore and Robyn Kiddle re-appointed as Directors.
Two items were voted on with eligible voting members submitting votes via Go Vote, an anonymous online system.
- It was moved to officially align the trading name from Playgroup Queensland Trading As Play Matters Australia to Play Matters Australia Limited, this was voted in favour.
- The two-decades old constitution was replaced by a newly formed constitution which was developed in collaboration with pro bono lawyers Ashurst advising. This was voted in favour.
