As we celebrate National Youth Volunteer Week, we are recognising the valuable contribution student volunteers make to Play Matters and the mutual benefits that come from creating meaningful placement opportunities.
We are committed to providing enriching, hands-on experiences that help students build skills, confidence and professional connections while contributing to stronger communities for children and families.
Meet - Ella!
Based at the Play Matters Ipswich Hub, Ella has been engaged with a variety of activities whilst supporting Community Development Officer Anni Harris and other team members, meeting with HIPPY families and tutors and out and about in community at events.
"My name is Ella, and I love all things animals, desserts, antiques, tea, and being creative. I enjoy collaging and art, singing, attending comedy clubs, jazz music, and finding hidden treasures in restaurants in Brisbane."
Ella said she chose Play Matters because it brought together her passions for Social Work and Play Therapy.
"I loved that Play Matters is a voluntary and community-based organisation that utilises a strengths-based approach to emphasise the power of play, empowers families with skills and confidence to support early childhood growth, and builds community by creating an inclusive, connected, and safe environment."In just a few weeks, Ella has experienced a diverse range of programs and activities, including community and hub-based playgroups, partnership meetings, HIPPY training, event preparation for NAIDOC celebrations and presenting projects focused on Play Therapy.
Ella will complete 500 hours over the course of 18 week, which means she will be able to embrace and experience many varied roles, program and playgroups throughout her placement.
For Play Matters, welcoming students like Ella brings fresh perspectives, enthusiasm and emerging expertise that enrich our work. For students, placements provide the opportunity to connect theory with practice, develop professional skills and explore future career pathways.
As Ella works towards completing her Social Work studies and her goal of becoming a Registered Play Therapist, we are proud to support her journey while benefiting from the knowledge, passion and dedication she brings to our organisation.
During National Youth Volunteer Week (10 to 16 August), the 2026 theme encourages us to celebrate the next generation of volunteers. The week encourages young people to discover volunteering opportunities and celebrates the contributions of existing young volunteers, supporting organisations to create meaningful, inclusive opportunities where young people are supported to thrive.
