International Day of Play

International Day of Play takes place on June 11, a day for children (and adults) to engage in the joy of play! It's a day to recognise children's right to play. Every child has to the right to rest and leisure, and to engage in play and recreational activities (UN, Article 31).

Play Matters Australia is passionate about supporting children's right to play, and we're excited that days like International Day of Play exist to showcase the wonderful benefits, and importance, of play. Play isn't just beneficial for children, it's the work they need to do. Through play, children learn and grow, which is why we know play matters every day.

Which is why you can find a huge range of play resources, right here.

Read and Play

Play Matters are the proud publishers of two Children's Picture Books about Play! These books are not only great stories about the wonder and importance of play, they'll inspire a whole lot of fun play ideas.

'I Can't Wait to Play' by Dannika Patterson

'I Can't Wait to Play' is an enriching book for families with young children that celebrates the world of play. Every child has the right to play, and Dannika Patterson's 'I Can't Wait to Play' captures the joy and accidental play parents, carers, and grandparents can bring into everyday life.

'Let's Play' by Karen Tyrrell

'Let's Play' is a fun, engaging story for families with young children to encourage playing, singing and growing together. 'Let's Play' supports the evidence-based Sing&Grow approach of strengthening family relationships and building capacity in parents to support their children’s development.

I Cant Wait To Play

'I Can't Wait to Play' Playbook

This Playbook is intended as a guide to inspire parents, caregivers and facilitators with a broad range of accessible activities to include more play in every day.

Inspired by the picture book, I Can’t Wait to Play! written by Dannika Patterson, this Playbook is filled with inspirational ideas to help children and their carers connect to this story - and each other - for a variety of different age groups.

The I Can’t Wait to Play!  picture book and the range of playful activities presented in this Playbook explore the fun of accessible every day and incidental play – from peekaboo, singing, dressing up, and reading, to grocery shopping, doing the laundry and even cleaning up.
