An urgent alert regarding coloured sand products imported into Australia that have tested positive for low levels of Tremolite and/or Chrysotile asbestos has been issued.
These products are commonly used in early childhood settings and playgroups. Affected brands include:
- Kadink (sold by Officeworks):
- 6 x 10g coloured decorative sand (all colours)
- 1.3kg coloured sand
- 2kg coloured sand
- Educational Colours – Coloured Sand
- Kmart and Target products:
- 14-piece Sand Castle Building Set (Batch no: 42975724)
- Pink Magic Sand (Batch no: 42304371)
- Blue Magic Sand (Batch no: 42304364)
- Green Magic Sand (Batch no: 432919650)
- Various Decorative Sand products
Immediate Action Required for playgroups and play experiences:
If you discover you have the recalled products at your playgroup, play experience or meeting site, please follow the steps below. Parents and carers who discover the products at their home may also wish to take similar steps.1. Cease use immediately – Do not allow children or adults to handle or play with the sand.
2. Isolate the products – Wear gloves, masks and other protective equipment. Seal sand in containers or bags and store in a locked, child-inaccessible location.
3. Do not disturb loose sand – Avoid sweeping, vacuuming, or shovelling spilled sand.
4. Seek specialist advice – Contact a licensed asbestos assessor or removalist for safe disposal. If safe to do so deliver to an Aspestos Removal Centre.
5. Notify families – Inform families or individuals that may have come into contact about the affected products that were used.
